The Bikram Sambat calendar in Nepal

Bikram Sambat (BS) is Nepal’s official calendar, roughly 56 years and 8½ months ahead of the Gregorian (AD) calendar. Citizenship certificates, land deeds, exam routines (SEE and NEB), salary slips, government notices and festivals such as Dashain, Tihar and the Nepali New Year (Baisakh 1) all follow it. Because the number of days in each BS month changes from year to year, conversion needs a verified day-count table rather than a simple formula. In daily life people most often convert a date of birth to AD for foreign visas, jobs and bank forms, or convert an AD deadline into BS to understand a Nepali notice.

Frequently asked questions

What is Bikram Sambat (BS)?

Bikram Sambat is the official calendar of Nepal. It runs roughly 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian (AD) calendar — for example, mid-2026 AD falls in 2083 BS.

How do I convert a Nepali date to English (AD)?

Use the BS → AD tab, select the Bikram Sambat year, month and day, and the equivalent English (Gregorian) date appears instantly, along with the weekday.

Why can't BS dates be converted with a simple formula?

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, the number of days in each Bikram Sambat month changes from year to year (29 to 32 days) with no fixed pattern. Accurate conversion therefore needs a verified day-count table for each year.

What date range does this converter support?

It supports Bikram Sambat years 1970 to 2090 (about 1913 to 2034 AD), which covers all common needs such as dates of birth, citizenship and official documents.

What are the 12 Nepali months?

Baisakh, Jestha, Asar, Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashoj, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun and Chaitra. The Nepali new year begins on Baisakh 1.
