Start with your situation

What kind of account do you need?

The universal process

From choosing a bank to activating the account

  1. 1

    Choose the account purpose

Start with ordinary savings, salary, remittance, student, minor, senior, NRN or foreign-currency needs—not the advertised interest rate alone.

  2. 2

    Compare the total cost

Check minimum balance, annual debit-card/mobile-banking fees, cheque fees, branch reach and the current service-charge schedule.

  3. 3

    Prepare KYC

Collect identity, National ID/NIN, contact, address, occupation, source of funds, nominee and tax information before opening the portal.

  4. 4

Apply online or at a branch

Complete the official bank form only. Upload readable files, select the correct branch and save the tracking/reference number.

  5. 5

    Complete verification

Finish Video KYC where offered or visit the selected branch with originals, signature and opening deposit. Activate only the services you need.

1. Choose the account before choosing the bank

An ordinary savings account is suitable for receiving money, paying bills, using a debit card and maintaining emergency savings. But a specialised account can be better when you receive salary, foreign remittance, pension or need a guardian-operated child account.

  • Normal savings: daily personal transactions and general saving.
  • Salary/payroll: salary credit and employer-linked benefits.
  • Remittance: foreign-employment income and remittance-specific benefits.
  • Minor/student: guardian operation or student-focused requirements.
  • Senior/women-focused: eligibility-specific benefits and service bundles.
  • NRN/foreign currency: residence, currency and source-of-funds rules.

2. Compare 10 major commercial banks

Nepal Rastra Bank currently licenses 20 Class-A commercial banks. This is a practical shortlist of 10 large or nationally significant banks—not an NRB quality ranking and not investment advice. The right choice depends on your branch location, preferred digital route and account type.

“Product-dependent” is intentional. Banks maintain several savings schemes, and minimum balances, bundled services and annual fees can change without a new page URL. Always open the product’s official page before applying.

3. Prepare the KYC documents and information

Your preparation

Loading your checklist…

Only checklist ticks are stored on this device. Tools Pasal never asks for or stores your National ID, citizenship number, bank application, income, OTP, PIN or account details.

4. Information most bank KYC forms ask for

Prepare these before opening the formExact labels and mandatory fields vary by bank and account type.
IdentityFull name, DOB, nationality, citizenship/National ID details and issuing office/date
AddressesPermanent, present and correspondence address with province, district, local level, ward and tole
Work & incomeOccupation, employer/business, expected transactions, source of funds and estimated income
Family & nomineeParents/spouse where requested, nominee, relationship and emergency contact
ComplianceOther bank accounts, tax/PAN, PEP status, criminal/CIB declarations, FATCA/residency where applicable
ServicesDebit card, mobile/internet banking, cheque book, SMS, C-ASBA, DEMAT and MeroShare choices

Enter names and dates exactly as supported by your identity documents. If your citizenship, National ID and PAN use different spellings, resolve the mismatch or ask the bank what evidence it accepts before submitting multiple applications.

5. Official account-opening process at six banks

Open the bank below for the exact preparation and completion flow. The first digital form is not always the final activation step.

Official Nabil online account-opening portal reviewed on 23 June 2026.

Choose residence and productRequired

Select whether you live in Nepal or abroad and whether you hold an NRN card. The portal then shows eligible savings products.

Create and verify profileRequired

Register with your own basic details, mobile number and email, then complete the OTP/email validation.

Complete applicationRequired

Enter personal, address, occupation, nominee and KYC information. Upload the valid ID and photograph in the requested image/PDF format.

Activate through Video KYCRequired

Open the Video KYC link sent by email and keep the original ID ready. The account is activated after identity and application verification.

Official application portalsEnter identity and financial information only after checking the bank domain.

6. Salary, remittance and purpose-specific accounts

Salary account

Ask whether your employer has a payroll arrangement. The bank may need an employer letter or staff list, and benefits can depend on regular salary credits.

Remittance account

Use it only when the account’s remittance conditions match your income. Keep foreign-employment/remittance evidence and compare withdrawal, card and mobile costs—not only the promotional interest rate.

Student or professional account

Carry the student card, admission/employment evidence or professional registration requested by that product. Benefits can stop when eligibility ends.

7. Minor and joint accounts

Minor account

A parent or legal guardian normally operates the account. Prepare the child’s birth registration or minor ID, guardian’s citizenship and National ID/NIN, relationship/guardianship proof and photographs. Ask what happens when the child reaches adulthood and must update KYC/signature.

Joint account

Every joint holder completes identity and KYC verification. Decide the operating instruction—either holder, both jointly, or another permitted mandate—and understand how closure, cards, cheques and survivor operation work.

8. Account opening from abroad or as an NRN

Nabil, Global IME and other banks publish overseas or Video KYC routes. Prepare passport, valid visa/residence evidence, Nepal citizenship or NRN card as applicable, foreign contact/address and proof of source of funds/remittance.

9. After submission: verify activation and charges

  1. Save the application/tracking reference and verification appointment.
  2. Complete Video KYC or branch verification with the original documents.
  3. Deposit the required opening/minimum balance through an authorised channel.
  4. Confirm the exact account name, number, maintaining branch and operating status.
  5. Collect or activate the debit card and change its PIN privately.
  6. Activate mobile banking only from the official app/store listing.
  7. Check annual service charges, transaction limits and nominee registration.
  8. Request DEMAT/MeroShare/C-ASBA separately if they were not included.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing a bank only because of one temporary interest-rate promotion.
  • Using someone else’s mobile number or email for OTPs and alerts.
  • Submitting unclear ID scans or names that do not match official records.
  • Assuming an online form means the account is already active.
  • Selecting a distant maintaining branch that is inconvenient for future KYC or card work.
  • Activating every paid service without checking annual fees.
  • Confusing minimum balance with the total first-year cost.
  • Sharing OTP, ATM PIN or mobile-banking password with an agent or caller.
  • Opening duplicate accounts instead of resuming the saved application.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best bank in Nepal for a savings account?

There is no single best bank for everyone. Choose using branch access, total annual service cost, mobile-app reliability, minimum balance, Video KYC, remittance/NRN support and the services you actually need. A larger bank is not automatically the best fit.

Can I open a bank account online without visiting a branch?

Some banks can complete onboarding through Video KYC, while others accept the online form but still require a selected-branch visit. Read the bank-specific completion step before assuming the account is active.

Is a National ID required to open a bank account in Nepal?

Prepare your National Identity Number or National ID. Current KYC implementation and bank notices can require it, even where an older portal initially accepts citizenship, passport or another government ID. Confirm the exact requirement with the chosen bank.

Can I open a zero-balance account?

Yes, some banks advertise zero-minimum-balance products, such as NIC Asia's current Sunya Maujdat savings product. Zero minimum balance does not mean every service is free forever; check debit-card, mobile-banking and other annual charges.

Can a minor open a bank account in Nepal?

Banks offer minor or child savings accounts operated through a parent or legal guardian. Prepare the child's birth registration or minor ID, guardian's identity/National ID, relationship proof and photographs required by the bank.

What is Video KYC?

Video KYC is a live call with an authorised bank representative who checks your face, original ID, application and signature. Use only the bank's official portal or link, and never share an OTP, PIN or mobile-banking password with the representative.

Do I need PAN to open a personal savings account?

PAN is not shown as a universal document for every basic personal account, but it can be required for particular products, salary/business activity, tax reporting, dollar cards and other services. Carry it when applicable.

Can a Nepali living abroad open an account?

Yes, several banks publish overseas, remittance or NRN routes and Video KYC. The correct account depends on residence, citizenship/NRN status and source of funds. Passport, visa/residence evidence, NRN card and remittance evidence may be required.

How long does account opening take?

A clean digital application and successful Video KYC may be completed quickly, but activation, compliance review, branch workload and missing documents can extend the process. Do not transfer important funds until the bank confirms the account is active and usable.

Should I choose the bank with the highest savings interest rate?

Not by itself. Savings rates change frequently and a small rate difference can be outweighed by annual card/mobile fees, inconvenient branches, minimum-balance penalties or poor access to the services you need.
