VAT in Nepal
Value Added Tax in Nepal is a flat 13% on most goods and services, administered by the Inland Revenue Department. A business must register for VAT once its turnover crosses the threshold (broadly Rs 50 lakh for goods and Rs 30 lakh for services), after which it charges 13% on sales, issues tax invoices (कर बीजक) and can claim credit for the VAT it paid on purchases. Some basic goods and services are exempt or zero-rated. Knowing how to add 13% to a price, or pull out the VAT already included in a quoted total, is everyday maths for shopkeepers, freelancers, accountants and customers checking a bill.
Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT rate in Nepal?
The standard Value Added Tax (VAT) rate in Nepal is 13%. This calculator uses 13% by default, but you can change the rate if needed.
How do I add 13% VAT to an amount?
Use the 'Add VAT' tab and enter the amount excluding VAT. The VAT (13% by default) and the total including VAT are shown instantly. For example, Rs 1,000 + 13% VAT = Rs 1,130.
How do I remove VAT from a total that already includes it?
Use the 'Remove VAT' tab and enter the VAT-inclusive total. It back-calculates the base amount and the VAT. For example, Rs 1,130 inclusive of 13% VAT = Rs 1,000 base + Rs 130 VAT.
