How to use it
- Choose your vehicle type (petrol/diesel two-wheeler, car, or electric).
- Enter the engine CC (or motor watt/kW for EVs).
- Pick how late your renewal is — the late fine is added automatically.
- See the breakdown: vehicle tax + renewal charge + fine = total to pay.
Vehicle tax matters in Nepal
Every registered vehicle in Nepal must renew its bluebook each year by paying vehicle tax (वाहन कर) to the provincial government, along with a renewal charge. Vehicle tax is a provincial tax — each province sets its own rates in its annual Finance Act, and they change every fiscal year — so the figures below are for Bagmati Province, FY 2082/83. The deadline is generally the end of Ashadh (around mid-July); paying late adds a growing fine.
Bagmati Province rates (FY 2082/83)
Motorcycle / Scooter (by CC)
| Engine capacity | Annual tax (रू) |
|---|---|
| up to 125 cc | 3,000 |
| 126–150 cc | 5,000 |
| 151–225 cc | 6,500 |
| 226–400 cc | 11,000 |
| 401–650 cc | 20,000 |
| 651 cc and above | 30,000 |
Car / Jeep / Van (by CC)
| Engine capacity | Annual tax (रू) |
|---|---|
| up to 1000 cc | 22,000 |
| 1001–1500 cc | 25,000 |
| 1501–2000 cc | 27,000 |
| 2001–2500 cc | 37,000 |
| 2501–2900 cc | 50,000 |
| 2901 cc and above | 65,000 |
Electric two-wheeler (by Watt)
| Motor power | Annual tax (रू) |
|---|---|
| up to 1000 W | 1,500 |
| 1001–1500 W | 2,000 |
| 1501 W and above | 3,000 |
Electric car / jeep / van (by kW)
| Motor power | Annual tax (रू) |
|---|---|
| up to 49 kW | 10,000 |
| 50–125 kW | 15,000 |
| 126–225 kW | 20,000 |
| 226 kW and above | 30,000 |
A renewal charge of about रू 300 (two-wheelers) or रू 500 (four-wheelers) is added. Electric vehicles enjoy much lower tax to encourage adoption.
Late-renewal fine
- Within 30 days of the deadline — 5% of the tax
- Within 45 days — 10%
- After 45 days (same fiscal year) — 20%
- After the fiscal year ends — about 32% per overdue year (for up to 5 years)
If several years are unpaid, you owe each year’s tax and renewal separately, each with its own fine — so it’s much cheaper to renew on time.
Where to pay / check
Pay at your provincial Transport Management Officeor its tax counter, or through the province’s online tax portal where available. Carry your bluebook and (for renewal) a valid third-party insurance, which is required but is separate from the tax.

Frequently asked questions
How is vehicle tax calculated in Nepal?
Annual vehicle (bluebook) tax depends on your vehicle type and engine size — measured in CC for petrol/diesel vehicles and in watts/kilowatts for electric ones. You pay the tax for your slab plus a small renewal charge, and a late fine is added if you renew after the deadline. Rates are set by each province, so they differ across Nepal.
When is the vehicle tax deadline?
Vehicle tax is generally due by the end of Ashadh (around mid-July) each fiscal year. Paying after that adds a late fine that grows the longer you wait.
What is the late fine for vehicle tax?
Commonly: 5% of the tax if paid within 30 days of the deadline, 10% within 45 days, 20% after 45 days within the same fiscal year, and about 32% per year once the fiscal year has ended (for each overdue year). Confirm the exact figure with your transport office.
Are these rates for the whole of Nepal?
No. Vehicle tax is a provincial tax. This calculator currently uses Bagmati Province rates for FY 2082/83. Other provinces (Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, Sudurpashchim) set their own rates.
Is the amount shown exact?
It's a close estimate for planning. Final amounts can include other small charges and depend on the latest provincial Finance Act and any waivers, so always confirm with the transport office or the official tax portal before paying.
